What it is
The Donum Award recognizes the best clinical case published in Saltus each year. “Donum” means “gift” in Latin: every patient who allows their case to be published gives a gift to medicine.
Eligibility
All case reports and case series published in Saltus during the calendar year compete automatically, with no application and no cost to authors. Excluded are articles with a standing expression of concern or retraction, and cases in which a member of the jury has a conflict of interest.
Selection criteria
The jury assesses each case against these criteria: (1) clinical relevance and novelty; (2) educational value for readers; (3) quality and completeness of reporting according to the CARE guideline; (4) ethical rigor, with documented informed consent; (5) the “El salto” box and the “Patient perspective”; (6) clarity of writing and quality of images.
Jury and process
The jury is appointed each year by the editor-in-chief from among editorial board members and journal reviewers, and is made public together with the decision. Members assess the finalist cases independently, with a score for each criterion; the final decision is taken by majority. No jury member assesses a case of their own or from their institution.
Calendar
The award is decided once a year, after the articles published in the period are closed. The calendar of each edition is announced on this page and by email to authors with published articles.
Recognition
The winning case receives a diploma signed by the editorial board, is featured on the journal's home page and is shared on its channels. The award carries no cash value and never influences the editorial decision on any manuscript.
